VHF and Walkie Talkie
The VHF (very high frequency) is part of the transceivers of the maritime mobile service in the VHF range. Whether fixed or mobile, it is an essential element for ensuring safety on board a boat at sea or on a river, as well as for organising emergency response. In the event of distress at sea, it allows information to be broadcast to all nearby vessels (yachtsmen or professionals), to contact the nearest CROSS and then the nautical or air rescue resources depending on the risk level of the situation. Thanks to the VHF, you can hear the boats around you to communicate or to provide assistance, but also receive local weather reports and special weather reports from Météo France broadcast by the CROSS along the entire coastline.
Channel 16 (n°196 on mobile phones) is used to alert the emergency services. Be careful not to clutter this channel which is a safety frequency and on which you are heard by all. Instead, use frequencies 6-8-72 or 77 which are intended for communication between ships.
Adopt a fixed or portable VHF depending on the type of navigation you practice:
PORTABLE VHF
They are required up to 6 miles from a shelter. There is no need for certification in French waters to use them. They have a good autonomy, are compact and convenient to communicate with boats and coastal stations between up to 6 miles around you. Some exist with the DSC device (M93DEURO) or with GPS (RT420).
FIXED VHF
The fixed VHF is compulsory for semi-offshore sailing (+6 miles from a shelter). For offshore navigation (+60 miles), a waterproof portable VHF and an EPIRB distress beacon must be added. Fixed VHFs are equipped with the DSC/DSC device (RT750) and some of the AIS (RT550). They have a long range (up to 25 miles).
To use it, it is necessary to obtain a RRC certificate in international waters more than 12 miles from the coast. Otherwise, in French waters, a simple coastal permit allows the use of a fixed VHF.
In all cases, it is necessary to obtain a user licence from the ANFR. If the VHF is DSC, you will receive with your license, an MMSI number that you will have to enter in your VHF DSC to couple it to the GPS. This allows you to create an automatic alert by transmitting your identity, but also your position to facilitate the intervention of the rescue services.
AIS allows automatic exchange of information between ships and with coastal traffic monitoring stations. It is mainly used as an anti-collision tool for commercial boats in dense areas.
