Compass and dividers
The compass is one of the essential instruments in maritime navigation. It is even mandatory on board as soon as you sail more than 2 miles from a shelter (Division 240). In pleasure boating, there are mainly two types of magnetic compasses: the course compass and the bearing compass. Gyroscopic, electronic or satellite compasses are sometimes used in yachting.
THE COURSE COMPASS
It is fixed near the tiller and indicates the boat's course. There are several types and sizes of compass depending on the boats used: built-in compasses for small boats equipped with a tiller, flat or conical rose compasses which are fixed close to a wheel or, lastly, stirrup compasses which are the simplest to install but often less accurate for the skipper as they are more sensitive to the boat's movements.
The course compass indicates the magnetic heading of the boat, which must be corrected by a number of parameters to follow a true heading and a true course.
Among these parameters, the deviation of the compass due to the magnetic disturbances of the boat (engine, electrical instruments) must be measured to establish a deviation curve. THE HAND-BEARING COMPASS
It is portable and allows to measure the magnetic direction of a landmark in order to "take a bearing" and to be able to check the position. It can also be used to check whether or not you are on a collision course with another boat if the bearings you are measuring on the other boat are constant.
