Sunglasses
At sea, seeing well is essential. Not only for safety reasons, but also to get the best performance out of your sailing or motor boat. Seeing the waves, distinguishing the waves on the water and anticipating the boat's trajectory is essential to make the best progress. Sunglasses are an essential part of the accessories sunglasses are a must for sailors and boaters as well as for all water sports enthusiasts. Here are the properties of the glasses of glasses which it is advisable to know to choose its pair of sunglasses.
HOW DO SUNGLASSES PROTECT THE EYES?
When we are exposed to sunlight, a natural mechanism opens or closes the pupils of the eyes to filter the light to the retina. But often this natural filter is not sufficient, especially for people with light eyes. Moreover, when sailing at sea or walking along the beach, the sunlight is reflected by the light reverberation on the waves or on the white hulls of boats and this light reaches the eye from all directions.
Sunglasses must therefore protect us from the invisible light which is the ultraviolet UV which is quite dangerous for the eyes (UVA is not very dangerous, but UVB can cause burns and lesions affecting the retina and vision). There are also infrared rays which can be dangerous for the eyes in extreme conditions (high mountains, desert...) by causing a drying out and a rise in temperature. Your sunglasses must therefore protect you 100% from UV.
As far as "visible" light is concerned, there are also dangers which are glare, fatigue, discomfort and sometimes a temporary drop in vision. This visible light has a different intensity depending on the place, the climate or the season... To be informed on the capacity of the sunglasses to protect you from these dangers, there are indices of filtrations which are different categories of protection to protect your eyes from these dangers
THE CATEGORIES OF SUNGLASSES
There are five categories classified on a scale from 0 to 4, according to the increasing percentage of light filtered; These categories have been classified according to the European standard NF EN ISO 12312-1 2013 concerning sunglasses for general use, published by the AFNOR group.
The filtration index or sun protection category which is basically the same thing determines the amount of visible light they allow to pass through the lens. The lower the transmission rate, the darker the glass and it is this tint of the glass that will affect the glare, but be careful, it does not affect the UV:
Category 0: light tint for comfort and aesthetics with a transmission rate of 80 to 100%
Category 1: light tint for low luminosity with a transmission rate of 43 to 80%
Category 2: medium tint for medium luminosity with a transmission rate of 18 to 43%
Category 3: dark tint for high luminosity with a transmission rate of 8 to 18%
Category 4: very dark tint for exceptional brightness with a transmission rate of 3 to 8%
If you are unsure of which category to choose, Picksea suggest that you choose category 3 as it is the most versatile and suitable for all sunny situations. You can also choose lenses that have photochromic which have multiple sun protection categories as their tints darken or lighten depending on the level of UV. Photochromic lenses are ideal in environments that often change in sunlight or brightness, which is the case at sea in mid-season in our latitudes. Beyond the category, it is also important to take into consideration the color of the glass which plays on your comfort of vision as well as on the "look".
PROTECT YOURSELF FROM UV
The key point in choosing sunglasses for water activities, sailing or boating is protection from UV rays. Indeed, it is not because the glass is dark that you will be protected from UV because the tint only plays on the visible light. Before you buy your sunglasses, make sure that the CE UV 400 standard appears on the sunglasses. This standard imposes performance requirements on designers and manufacturers to provide you with sunglasses that block all light rays with a wavelength of 400 nanometers, which covers all UVA and UV rays.
