IOR buoys and poles
IOR buoys and poles are essential elements of safety on board to allow the location and assistance for people who have fallen into the water. This set is used firstly to enable the person to hold onto a floating object but above all to "mark" and see the position of the person who has fallen into the water for the time needed to carry out the recovery manoeuvre. A person who has fallen into the water is hardly visible in heavy seas.
BUOYS WITH REVERSING LIGHTS
These are crown buoys or horseshoe equipped with a floating light device that lights up "by turning over" when thrown into the water. The flip-flop light must be attached to the buoy by a sufficiently long piece of line (> 1 m) so as not to prevent the light from flipping. The reversing light must be equipped with batteries to ensure lighting in case of need. There are also LED lights 100% waterproof battery operated devices, which are much more reliable but need to be renewed every 5 years.
IOR POLES
The IOR pole is best suited for offshore sailing or cruising. It is even mandatory in many races and regattas. It is a 2 m pole (when deployed) with an orange flag and an automatic light at its end. It can be fixed or inflatable. This is a very effective way of locating a man overboard, especially at night.
