Steering compass
The compass is an indispensable instrument in marine navigation: it allows the helmsman to follow a relatively precise course and to orientate himself in case of reduced visibility. A magnetic course compass is mandatory when sailing more than 6 miles from a shelter. In the coastal zone within 6 miles of a shelter, the magnetic compass may be replaced by the GPS but at Picksea we don't recommend this choice as it is difficult to follow a course on a GPS indication.
HOW TO CHOOSE A STEERING COMPASS FOR YOUR BOAT?
To choose a magnetic compass for your boat, several criteria must be taken into account:
- Type of boat: The differences in sea behaviour between a sailboat, a motorboat and a typical light boat kayak For example, sailboats need a compass that will work even with a large heel angle, while motorboats need a compass that can withstand the shock of speed. For example, sailboats must have a compass that works even with a large heel angle. For motorboats, compasses must be able to withstand the shocks associated with speed.
- The program and the navigation area: If you plan to sail at night, you will need backlit compasses. For long distance cruising, you need to worry about the navigation zones on the globe. For example, compasses for navigating in the southern hemisphere have a different design than those used in the northern hemisphere.
- The size of the compass: Depending on the distance between the helmsman and the compass, it may be necessary to choose a larger compass so that the helmsman can see the compass indications correctly.
- Installation and mounting of the compass: Depending on the boat builder's specifications, you will have to choose a compass that can be installed on a barrel, a stirrup or even at the foot of the mast... There are many possibilities with the different manufacturers.
IS IT NECESSARY TO MAKE A DEVIATION CURVE OF ITS COURSE COMPASS?
If you are using the course compass for long offshore sailing, it is strongly recommended that you know the magnetic disturbances of the compass and establish the deviation curve. Indeed, a deviation of 3° over a distance of 50 miles causes a deviation of 5 miles at the finish. It is therefore necessary to have the ability to maintain the most accurate course possible.
