Bearing compass
The bearing compass is an instrument that is considered indispensable for being able to take stock of the situation on board a yacht. It allows you to know the direction of a landmark in relation to (magnetic) North: by tracing the directions of several landmarks on the chart with your slash rule or its Breton rapporteur. The position of the boat can be easily determined. The bearing compass is also used to check if you are (or are not) on a collision course with another boat. Finally, it is also used a lot in sailing and racing to optimize its trajectory in relation to the wind.
HOW TO USE A BEARING COMPASS ?
The bearing compass has a sighting device (usually "magnifying") which is positioned in the direction of the sea wall or ship whose magnetic direction is to be taken. All that remains to be done is to read the magnetic direction indicated by the graduated crown in the sighting device. Before taking this measurement on the nautical chart to plot the measured bearing, don't forget to add or remove the magnetic declination value.
Recommendations for using a bearing compass: beware of magnetic disturbances which can distort the measurements (metal glasses, mobile phone, proximity of the engine or a VHF antenna, etc.) and if the sea is rough, set the compass at the point on the boat which moves the least (for a sailing boat, for example, this is often the mast foot).
