Neoprene tops
For sailing, dinghy sailing, catamaran sailing, kite-surfing, windsurfing, jet-skiing and other water sports, it is important to protect yourself from the cold. Neoprene tops are worn either directly or in addition to neoprene clothing or dry suits.
The neoprene tops have a thin thickness between 0.5 and 3 mm which will effectively protect the chest and arms against the cold for water temperatures close to 20°C. These tops can be long or short sleeved and are an ideal compromise for the summer or mid-season to avoid the hot suit. They can be combined with shorts or neoprene bottoms: this is similar to a shorty, but with the same freedom of movement.
HOW ARE THE NEOPRENE TOPS MADE?
The basic insulating material is neoprene, a synthetic rubber that is not 100 % waterproof but keeps the body parts warm. Neoprene is also a soft and comfortable material to wear. It is light and water-repellent, does not absorb water and dries very quickly. Neoprene is usually lined with one or two layers of stretch, elastane or polyester material to maintain freedom of movement while providing protection against the cold.
